DTS / Distributed Temperature Sensing

Distributed fiber-optic temperature sensing (DTS)

A4 Sensors develops measurement instruments and software for distributed temperature monitoring. Sensing cable provides a temperature profile along an asset, while the result is delivered to an operator interface or the customer's system.

DTS measures temperature continuously along a sensing line. It is a different class of solution from a set of individual point temperature sensors.

What DTS measures

Optical fiber as a continuous temperature sensor

Distributed temperature sensing uses fiber-optic sensing cable to measure along the full length of a monitored section. The result is not a single reading but a temperature profile mapped to a position along the line.

This approach is intended for assets where temperature distribution, localized changes, and measurement history need to be observed in one software environment.

  1. 01

    Distributed measurement

One sensing cable produces a sequence of temperature measurements along the monitored asset.

  2. 02

    Measurement unit

Optical and electronic subsystems interrogate the line and convert the fiber response into digital data.

  3. 03

    Software environment

Software displays the temperature profile, stores history, and transfers results to external information systems.

Technology comparison

Distributed DTS and point fiber sensors

A4Sensors DTS measures temperature along the entire optical line and produces a continuous profile. Point sensors provide readings only at their installation locations.

DTS / A4Sensors

Distributed temperature sensing

Sensing cable acts as a long continuous sensing element and provides a temperature profile along an asset.

  • Measurements are distributed along the line
  • Every value is associated with a position
  • Hardware, processing, interface, and integration form one system

Another measurement class

Point fiber-optic sensors

Point solutions measure only at the installed sensing elements and use a different interrogation architecture.

  • Measurements are made at selected points
  • The sensor count determines the number of measurement points
  • Technology choice depends on asset geometry and the measurement task

Operating principle

From a temperature change to operator data

The measurement chain combines sensing cable, a DTS unit, data processing, and a software interface.

  1. 01

    Temperature event

Temperature at the monitored section changes the optical response of the sensing fiber.

  2. 02

    Line interrogation

The measurement unit records the response along the cable and maps data to a position.

  3. 03

    Profile generation

Processing algorithms convert the measurement stream into an asset temperature profile.

  4. 04

    Display and integration

The result is available in software or delivered to the customer's system through an agreed protocol.

Application experience

Distributed temperature monitoring for industrial assets

Sensing-line and software configuration is selected for the asset geometry, measurement conditions, and integration requirements.

01

Heat-exchange equipment

One project included a method for placing sensing cable in twisted tubes and measuring temperature along its full length.

02

Cryogenic processes

The instrument was used at LNG facilities for distributed temperature monitoring under cryogenic conditions.

03

Long linear assets

DTS supports tasks where temperature needs to be observed along a sensing route instead of at isolated points.

Technology in brief

Questions about distributed temperature sensing

01What is distributed temperature sensing?

It is an optoelectronic measurement system that uses sensing fiber to obtain a temperature profile along a monitored asset.

02How is DTS different from a conventional sensor?

A conventional sensor measures at one point. DTS produces multiple measurements along the sensing cable and maps them to position.

03What can an A4Sensors solution include?

Project scope can include the sensing line, measurement unit, data processing, web interface, and integration with the customer's system.

04Can DTS data be delivered to an external system?

Yes. The A4Sensors software environment supports data display and project-specific integration through agreed protocols.
